The best servers have a high player count, votes on top lists and good uptime. Use filters for expansion (e.g. WotLK, Classic), type (Blizzlike, PvP, PvE).
Playing on private servers is not illegal (no criminal charges for players), but violates Blizzard's EULA/ToS. Blizzard pursues server hosts for copyright infringement, not individual players.
Go to the server website, create an account, depending on the case: download their launcher, client or patcher for the expansion, run it to set the realmlist automatically, then login with your username/password.
